How much does a bail bond cost in Louisiana?
Louisiana sets the rate by statute. Under La. R.S. 22:1443, the premium for a commercial bail bond is 12% of the face amount of the bond, or $120, whichever is greater. On top of that, La. R.S. 22:822 requires a fee of $2 for each $100 of liability paid to the sheriff of the parish — the sheriff cannot accept the bond without it. So a $10,000 bond means a $1,200 premium plus the statutory fee. We give you the exact total before you sign anything.
How long does it take to get out of jail once the bond is posted?
It depends on the facility, the time of day and how busy booking is. Some releases happen within about half an hour of the bond being accepted; others take several hours, especially overnight or on a weekend when a jail is processing a lot of arrests. We stay in contact with the jail and keep you updated instead of leaving you guessing.
Are you really available 24 hours a day?
Yes. Approach Freedom Bail Bonds answers the phone 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including weekends and holidays. Most of our calls come in outside normal business hours, because that is when most arrests happen.
Is the bail bond premium refundable if the charges are dropped?
No. The premium is the fee for the bonding company assuming the risk of guaranteeing the full bond amount to the court. It is earned once the bond is posted and the defendant is released, even if the case is later dismissed. Collateral is different — under Louisiana Department of Insurance Regulation 123, collateral must be returned within 30 days after the bail obligation is discharged.
What do I need to be a co-signer?
A co-signer (indemnitor) is normally a Louisiana resident with a valid photo ID, verifiable income or employment, and real ties to the area. As a co-signer you are guaranteeing the full face amount of the bond if the defendant fails to appear, and Louisiana law makes that indemnity agreement enforceable. We walk you through the whole document before you sign it — no surprises.
What happens if the defendant misses a court date?
The court issues a warrant immediately. Notice of that warrant has to go out to the defendant, the bail agent and the surety within 60 days. From the date that notice is certified, the surety has 180 days to surrender or constructively surrender the defendant before the district attorney can move for a bond forfeiture judgment. If you think a court date has been missed, call us right away — the sooner we know, the more options exist.
