What We Actually Do
A bail bond is a guarantee. When a court sets bail, the full amount must be posted before someone is released. Most families cannot put up the full amount in cash. We post a commercial surety bond guaranteeing that full amount to the court, and you pay the premium that Louisiana law sets — 12% of the face amount of the bond, or $120, whichever is greater, under La. R.S. 22:1443, plus the statutory fee that goes to the parish sheriff.
Beyond that, the job is logistics and communication: confirming where someone is being held, finding out whether a bond has actually been set, explaining what a co-signer is agreeing to, driving to the jail, posting the bond, and then keeping in touch about court dates so a manageable situation does not turn into a forfeiture and a new warrant.

Bail bond agents in Louisiana are licensed by the Louisiana Department of Insurance as insurance producers with a bail bond line of authority. That means prelicensing education, a supervised three-month apprenticeship under La. R.S. 22:1574, fingerprinting, a state examination, and twelve hours of continuing education every two years. You are entitled to verify any bondsman’s license through the Department of Insurance, and you should.
